East from Vancouver, Indulging in the Fraser Valley's Hot Spring Warmth & Tunnel Mysteries

2- 3 days

Craving a short trip that both relaxes the mind and body and offers a unique experience of history and natural wonders? Heading east from Vancouver into the picturesque Lower Fraser Valley, you'll find this perfect combination. This carefully designed (optional) three-day itinerary will first immerse you in the healing waters of Harrison Hot Springs, then take you to Hope to hike and explore the breathtaking Othello Tunnels. Spring, summer, and autumn are all suitable for this trip, with summer and autumn offering the most pleasant weather, open tunnels, and best scenery.

Day 1

Day's Itinerary: Vancouver → Harrison Hot Springs → Check-in at Harrison Hot Springs

Depart from downtown Vancouver, and an approximately 1.5-hour drive will bring you to the renowned resort destination – Harrison Hot Springs. This charming village, nestled on the southern shore of Harrison Lake, is famous for its natural hot springs. Upon arrival, the primary experience is, naturally, soaking in the hot springs. You can choose to stay at a resort hotel with private hot spring pools or visit public hot spring facilities, letting the mineral-rich waters wash away travel fatigue and soothe your body and mind.

In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll along Harrison Lake, admiring the magnificent lake and mountain scenery. The village itself is also worth exploring, with various boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. In the evening, enjoying dinner at a lakeside restaurant while watching the sunset is undoubtedly a delightful experience. Check into your accommodation in Harrison Hot Springs village to prepare for the next day's adventures.

Day 2

Day's Itinerary: Harrison Hot Springs → Hope → Othello Tunnels → Check-in at Hope or Return to Vancouver

In the morning, you can continue to enjoy leisure time in Harrison Hot Springs. You might choose some water activities on the lake, such as kayaking, canoeing, or a boat tour (depending on the season), or relax on the lakeside beach.

In the afternoon, drive approximately 45 minutes to Hope, a town famous as a filming location for the movie "First Blood." After a short break, head to a major highlight of this trip – the Othello Tunnels. This series of old railway tunnels, built in the early 20th century, runs through the cliffs of the Coquihalla Canyon, offering truly spectacular scenery. You'll need to walk a gentle path to reach and pass through the tunnels, experiencing the grandeur of their engineering and the vicissitudes of history. Comfortable walking shoes and a flashlight (some tunnels can be dark) are recommended.

After visiting the Othello Tunnels, you can choose to stay overnight in Hope for more exploration the next day. If time is tight, you can also depart for Vancouver in the late afternoon, with the drive taking about 2 hours.

Day 3- optional

Day's Itinerary: (If staying in Hope) Nearby Trails/Manning Park Edge Area → Return to Vancouver

If you choose to stay overnight in Hope, the third day can be more relaxed. Hope and its surroundings boast numerous excellent hiking trails; you can choose one based on your fitness level and interests to further explore BC's magnificent natural scenery. Alternatively, you can drive to the edge of nearby E.C. Manning Provincial Park to admire alpine meadows and lake views (note that the park itself is large, and even reaching the edge areas requires some driving time).

After finishing your explorations around Hope, begin your leisurely journey back to Vancouver. This Fraser Valley hot springs and tunnel quest perfectly combines the healing power of nature with the unique charm of human history, adding an unforgettable memory to your British Columbia trip.
