North from Winnipeg, Discovering Gimli's "Icelandic Heart by the Lake" & Cultural Charm

2 days

On the vast Canadian Prairies lies a small town filled with exotic charm – Gimli. As the heart of the "New Iceland" cultural region, Gimli has perfectly preserved the unique traditions and culture brought by Icelandic immigrants in the late 19th century. Departing from Winnipeg, this meticulously planned two-day itinerary will take you deep into this "Icelandic Heart by the Lake," to experience the imprint of Viking culture and the magnificence and tranquility of Lake Winnipeg. Suitable for all seasons, with summer lakeside activities and the annual Icelandic Festival (usually on the August long weekend) being particularly lively.

Day 1

Day's Itinerary: Winnipeg → Gimli → Accommodation Check-in → New Iceland Heritage Museum → Viking Statue at the Harbour/Main Street Specialty Shops → Lakeside Sunset → Fish and Chips Dinner

In the morning or around noon, depart from downtown Winnipeg; an approximately 1-hour drive will easily bring you to Gimli, located on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. Upon arrival, first check into your pre-booked accommodation. Gimli offers a variety of lodging options, from comfortable hotels to cozy B&Bs.

In the afternoon, begin your Icelandic cultural exploration. First, visit the New Iceland Heritage Museum to gain a deep understanding of the arduous journey and unique culture of Icelandic immigrants in establishing the "New Iceland" community in Canada, through rich exhibits and interpretations. Afterwards, head to Gimli Harbour to take a photo with the iconic Viking Statue, one of the town's most famous landmarks. Then, stroll along Gimli's main street, browsing characterful shops, especially the historic Tergesen & Sons Trading Post, a century-old store, to soak in its rich historical atmosphere.

In the late afternoon, take a leisurely walk by Lake Winnipeg, admiring the magnificent sunset over the lake. For dinner, don't miss the locally famous Fish and Chips; many restaurants offer fresh and delicious local fish.

Day 2

Day's Itinerary: Lakeside Beach/Pier → Gimli Glider Exhibit → Lunch → (Optional) Winnipeg Beach Town → Return to Winnipeg

In the morning, enjoy leisure time by the lake in Gimli. You can relax on the sandy beach, enjoying the sun and lake breeze, or walk out onto the long pier to feel the wind and gaze out over the vast expanse of Lake Winnipeg. Afterward, visit the unique Gimli Glider Exhibit. This exhibit commemorates the miraculous emergency landing of an Air Canada Boeing 767 passenger jet at the Gimli airbase in 1983 after it ran out of fuel. Through the exhibit, you can learn about this legendary event in aviation history.

Around noon, have lunch in Gimli. You can try local specialties again or choose a restaurant with a different cuisine.

In the afternoon, drive back to Winnipeg. If time permits, you can make a brief stop en route at Winnipeg Beach, another town on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, to experience its nostalgic charm as a former resort destination.

This "Icelandic Heart by the Lake" Gimli cultural escape weekend will offer you a unique experience filled with exotic charm, historical depth, and natural beauty, making it an excellent choice for a short trip from Winnipeg.
